Congress May Cut Your Benefits to Subsidize Massive Tax Cuts For The Wealthy
Posted: November 9, 2012 Filed under: Legislative, News Leave a comment »Our members of Congress are headed back to Washington for a few final weeks of business, in their so-called “lame duck” session. The work they do could prove to have devastating results for the future of working families.
Some legislators are determined to cut Social Security benefits, raise the retirement age for Social Security and Medicare, and cut Medicaid, forcing families into bankruptcy should a loved one need long-term care. The reason for these cuts? To provide outrageous tax breaks for the richest 2% of Americans.
This is not what America needs, and it is not what we voted for. Take a stand and tell our representatives to put working families first.
Call your members of Congress now at 888-659-9401 and tell them:
1. No more tax cuts for the richest 2% of Americans.
2. No benefit cuts to Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid.

CWA Political Action Fund
Posted: May 25, 2012 Filed under: Announcement, Legislative Leave a comment »Right now we are in the process of fundraising for the CWA Political Action Fund. This is a voluntary fund which does not affect membership status in any way, and any funds contributed to it will be used for political purposes, on a local, statewide and national level.
This is an important election year, and now is the time to begin contributing if you are not already doing so. Right now, we are able to offer pens with integrated 2GB USB Flash Drives to all members who can either begin contributing a minimum of $2/wk ($4 per pay period) when you sign up). Existing contributors are eligible for the same reward by increasing their contribution by at least $1/wk ($2/pay period) as well. For new contributors who are only able to commit to $1/wk ($2/pay period) we will still be able to reward you with a handsome CWA tumbler through the mail.
It is vital that all members who are able to participate do so. As many of you know, our rights to organize and collectively bargain have come under direct, aggressive attacks. These attacks are aimed directly at all of us; at our families. This affects each and every one of us right now, and if we do not stand united, it will have lasting effects for generations to come.
Please commit to giving two dollars a week, more if you are able, to helping to protect everything we’ve worked so hard to secure. This is for all of us, our children, and our grandchildren.
We will have the contribution forms available through stewards ASAP, or if you would like to have one brought to you at work or home, you may call or text Curtis at 806-786-5192.
Thanks for helping out!
Block Walking for Delwin Jones
Posted: May 4, 2012 Filed under: Announcement, Legislative Leave a comment »On Saturday, 5/12/2012 we will be meeting at the United Supermarket at 50th and Avenue Q in the east side parking lot. We need volunteers to spend a few hours block walking in support of Delwin Jones. Volunteers will be hanging flyers on doors and speaking briefly with interested residents in support of this candidate.
Delwin Jones is a longtime supporter of labor concerns, who is seeking to win back his former seat in the Texas Legislature. This seat is currently held by Tea Party member Charles Perry.
If you can help out please call the event organizer, Mike Torres. Mike is a member of the Texas State Employees Union and Lubbock Central Labor Council. He can be reached at 632-7690. It is important that we get as many of our members as possible involved in this movement and remember — the more volunteers, the quicker the walk will go.
If you have any questions, please contact Mike Torres at 632-7690.

Support The Call Center Worker and Consumer Protection Act
Posted: January 31, 2012 Filed under: Legislative Leave a comment »CWA National is calling for members to support the Call Center Worker and Consumer Protection Act. You can voice your support through the link to the national web site, however, we are asking members to take additional action. Please see a Steward for further information, we are requesting that all members who are able to do so write a hand-written letter to our member of congress, Randy Neugebauer, expressiong how important this bill is to us.
In addition to directly addressing the jobs we do each and every day, this bill contains protections that affect every single American. It provides vital protections for consumers, including the right to know where the call center you’re communicating with is located. This is extremely important as once a call leaves the USA, legal protections are weakened or nullified, putting you at risk for fraud and identity theft. This bill will require consumers, at their request, to be transferred to a domestic call center, protecting their rights.
Holding Big Banks and Mortgage Fraudsters Accountable
Posted: January 24, 2012 Filed under: Legislative Leave a comment »The Texas AFL-CIO is asking all of our members who are able to do so to join us in signing a petition asking President Obama to investigate and hold big banks and mortgage fraudsters responsible for the severe damage their actions have caused to American working families and their dreams of home ownership. Please join us in this call for accountability!
